Name check

Name check compares a name with every trademark in the Registry's list, every company registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, and the .com, .in and .co.in domains. Use it before a client files a mark or registers a company.

Open Name check in the sidebar, type the name and choose Check name. Add classes, separated by commas, to see only marks in those classes. Leave classes empty to see every class.

What you see

At the top, three counts: trademarks alike, companies alike, and how many of the three domains are free.

Trademarks lists marks alike to the name, closest first. Each row shows the mark, its application number and filing date, the class, the status, the proprietor and why it matched. Select a mark to open its full record.

Companies lists companies with names alike to the name, with the CIN, status, state and date of registration. LLPs are not in the government's open company list, so they are not shown.

Domains shows whether the name, written as one word, is free as a .com, .in and .co.in domain. Nishaan asks each domain registry when you check. If a registry does not answer, the domain shows Could not check.

Why a name matched

The reason in each row says how close the match is:

  • the same name: spelt the same, including joined or split words. "CHAIAURDIARY" is the same name as "Chai aur Diary".
  • the same name with a business word: the other name adds only words like Foods, Tech or Industries.
  • contains: every word of your name is in the other name.
  • is part of your name: the other name is one or more of your words.
  • similar overall: spelt nearly the same.
  • sounds like: written differently but said the same, such as PHIRKI and FIRKI.
  • shares: one distinctive word or sound in common. These are the weakest matches.

Words that thousands of company names share, such as Private Limited, Foods, Services or Technologies, never make two names alike on their own.

Things to know

Name check is a search of names, not a legal opinion. Logos without readable words, and filings made in the last few days, may be missing. The Registrar of Companies may refuse a new company name that is too like an existing company's name or a registered trademark, so check both before choosing a company name.

The website has a free name check at nishaan.yatricloud.com/name-check. It shows the closest eight of each. Inside Nishaan you see up to 100.
